Angry cyclist attacks motorist BY BARRY CLARKE An angry cyclist attacked a motorist in Fendalton – and now police are trying to find him. The victim, aged 56, was punched several times in the head after words were exchanged on Glandovey Rd, near the railway crossing between Heaton St and Idris Rd. Police were called but the cyclist, a large man in his 30s or 40s, wearing lycra pants and a plain blue training shirt, had disappeared. The victim told the Nor’West News the cyclist went berserk. The cyclist had cut across him as he was driving, forcing him to swerve. The cyclist then punched his car. “I pulled over and said: ‘You clown, what do you think you’re doing?’ “He dropped his bike and ran at me, swearing and carrying on,” he said. The motorist, who declined to

Two bus stops outside Burnside High School could be moved by the end of the year “before someone gets knocked down and killed”. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board on Monday fast-tracked the decision to move the Greers Rd bus stops to outside Jellie Park, in a bid to tackle urgent safety issues caused by their position outside and opposite the school. The decision will now come before the city council. City councillor Raf Manji said he was fairly confident the decision to move the stops would pass. “We would prefer to do it now, before someone gets knocked down and killed,” he said. In February, two year 9 Burnside High School students were hit by a car while walking along the footpath outside the school. The bus stop shift would give

more space for buses to park, increasing visibility for pedestrians and cars. Currently, people were crossing the road dangerously because they could not see oncoming vehicles when buses were parked outside the school. The board also requested that city council staff investigate a signalised crossing near the boundary of Jellie Park and Cottesmore Close. Community board deputy chairman David Cartwright said with the current set-up, a fatal accident “wasn’t a case of if, but when”. “Those two girls getting knocked down really did highlight it for everyone,” he said. “It was very lucky those girls weren’t killed, we’ve got to put this up the front of the agenda.” He said the stops could be moved by the end of this year. Following the accident, Sergeant Nigel Price was tasked with assessing the road outside the school and

found it to be “chaotic”. “We have had accidents there in the past and I don’t want to see them repeated,” he said. Sergeant Price’s recommendations included moving the bus stops north toward Jellie Park and installing a “proper crossing” to let students from both Burnside High School and the opposite Christ The King School get from the bus to the school gate safely. “The sooner we act, the sooner we fix the problem and the sooner the chance is lowered of someone being hit or killed, it’s simple mathematics,” he said. Last Monday, Burnside High School representatives presented a letter and deputation to the community board signed by deputy chairman of the school’s board of trustees, Charles Breurkes, deputy principal Tim Grocott and Christ The King School principal Mike Bonisch. The letter asked for the board’s support in urgently

moving the bus stops and installing a signalised crossing. “The problem with the bus stops where they currently are is they block traffic,” Mr Grocott told the Nor’West News. “When the kids are exiting the bus, they are just walking straight across the road, lots of kids just streaming across the road, not on a pedestrian crossing.” The letter addressed problems of pedestrians and vehicles having limited visibility at the site, creating dangerous risk when crossing the road at peak times. Mr Grocott said the issue was made worse by increased traffic on Greers Rd since the earthquake. “The amount of businesses and things that have moved to the north west of Christchurch has added to the traffic. It’s considered a secondary route but is used as a main arterial route,” he said of the road. “There is a sense of urgency before there are any tragedies.”

Angry cyclist attacks motorist •From page 1 The cyclist then got on his bike and rode off. The motorist pursued him, but the cyclist managed to evade him

by riding along a footpath. The motorist called the police. But the cyclist had vanished. He suffered 3 ear and neck injuries in the attack.

Flood group leader eyes community role BY FIONA THOMAS AND HALEY JONES

The woman who took John Key to task over Christchurch’s flooding is standing for her community board. Jo Byrne set up the Flockton Cluster residents group in June last year to tackle postearthquake flooding issues in the area around her Carrick St home. This week she was announced as one of three candidates running to fill the spot left empty by the departure of deputychairwoman Gemma Maslin on the Shirley-Papanui Community Board. The other candidates are Lynda Goodrick and Emma Rawson. Ms Goodrick is currently the agency manager for the Belfast Community Network, an organisation she’s been involved in since 2001. She has also been part of many governance groups, including the board of trustees at Papanui Primary School. She said she was excited for the elections, as she felt she had a lot to offer the community and had a good understanding of Government processes. Miss Rawson is a self-employed public health consultant, who previously spent two

Monday July 7 2014 ▌IN ▌ BRIEF Pool repairs

A second round of school pool repairs will see the Ministry of Education repair pools at 15 more Canterbury schools by next year. The Government announced last week that the pools, would be repaired as part of a $1.137 billion investment over 10 years in education renewal in greater Christchurch. Pools at Northcote School, Harewood School, Roydvale School, St Albans School and Waimairi School were all named on the list set for repairs by the next school year.

years working in community public health at the Canterbury District Health Board. She said she decided to run for the position on the board as she wanted to provide a voice between the community and the city council and be an advocate for issues in the area. Ms Byrne said she was running to “put my money where my mouth is”. “I’d like to do something and make a difference in Christchurch. There’s a lot of people who complain and don’t put their hand up,” she said. Ms Byrne featured on Campbell Live earlier this year, confronting the Prime Minister about the flooding problems of the city. She said if she was elected, she would be happy to take a

back seat in the Flockton Cluster group to avoid a conflict of interest. “This isn’t really about Flockton, from Flockton’s perspective we have gained enough momentum that the flooding issues will be solved,” she said. When asked if the move was a lead in to more serious politics, like the city council, Ms Byrne said no. Voting papers will be sent to enrolled Shirley-Papanui residents from August 7 to 12. Votes must be returned in the FreePost envelope provided by noon on Friday, August 29 with preliminary results declared that afternoon. Special voting facilities will be available at Papanui Service Centre at the corner of Langdons Rd and Restell St.

Kids will have the chance to make their own fudge these school holidays as part of the TV2 KidsFest. The Fudge Cottage, in Bishopdale Mall, opened its doors on Saturday for Fudge Spectacular, a chance to design and create a “fudge spectacular”. The courses run until July 18 and cost $15 per child, no caregivers. Kidsfest will run 240 different events across the city from July 5 to 19. More information and times can be found at www.kidsfest.co.nz.

The poles would be funded and installed by Mainland Football Association which will be responsible for gaining building and resource consents for them. The lights may operate only until 9pm on training nights and 9.30pm on one permitted game night per week. The approval will lapse if the poles are not completed within two years.

Legal high shops

Consultation opened last week on the city council Draft Psychoactive Products Retail Locations Policy, which deals with where legal high shops are allowed to open. Plans for the policy were announced in April, but were delayed until after national policies on psychoactive substances went through Parliament in May. Consultation will close on August 4, with the policy expected to be put in place in October.

Lighting replacement

The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board last week resolved to support the application by Burnside Rugby Football Club Incorporated to remove and replace eight lighting poles with lamps at Burnside Park. The lights will be replaced at the expense of the football club. They will be operated on a maximum of four nights over any weekday period and not after 9pm. The poles will be painted flax green. The community board also resolved to support the installation of six lighting poles at Avonhead Park.

Writing books result of starting Ten years ago Rosie Belton suffered a traumatic brain injury which pulled the curtains on her theatre career. But the Governors Bay resident has sprung back, with a new writing career and an appreciation of the little things in life. She speaks to Emma-Jane McLennan Rosie, tell me about your book, Wild Blackberries. How is that going? Well it’s still on the top 20 list for New Zealand. It’s going much better than I expected, it’s only been out for eight weeks or something. Margaret Mahy wrote the foreword for me, she was a great friend and encourager. She loved the book when it was being written, I wish I could show it to her now. It covers my travels since I was four-years-old, across 22 countries and also a lot about life in the harbour. There are lots of diary entries, and of course recipes. Wow, 22 countries, that is a lot of travel! Where are some of your favourite places to go? Yes, I’ve travelled a lot, for both mine and my husband’s work. I love the harbour, but my other great love is France. Another two really special places I’ve been to are Antanarivo in Madagascar, and Tromso in northern Norway. When I went to Madagascar my grandchildren could only think of the film! (Laughing) I was the guest of one of the ministers of parliament there because of my work, so I was treated to a very privileged

visit. One of the highlights was a trip to the forest, it was just full of lemurs. It was also interesting because Russia had taken over the country, so all of the place names and children’s names were Russian. And the people were all very poor, but very happy. Then there was Tromso, a little town in northern Norway, almost as far north as you can get before the North Pole. I was there for a theatre conference as I was the New Zealand representative for young people’s theatre. It was an especially interesting place. I went in mid-summer but there was still snow in patches, and the trees were all getting ready to unfurl. And of course it was light 24 hours a day. You could actually see the sun going around, which was really weird. People don’t sleep much there, they were playing up on the hills. Of course there are 52 days of total light and 52 of total

dark a year. I always wrote a lot while I was travelling, diary entries and the like. Some of those were used in Wild Blackberries. It sounds wonderful! Was that your first book? No, my first book was called Just a Bang on the Head. That was about when my life changed. I started writing after a brain injury which required surgery. I couldn’t drive for five years and I had to completely start over. Tell me a little more about your brain injury – how did that happen? Well, I fell over at a wedding and hit my head. I had to have two surgeries just for survival. My recovery was very slow, and I am so fortunate to be as good as I am. I think I am so lucky to live in such a lovely environment, it was so important to my recovery. How did your injury affect your life? I can’t go back into the film industry because of the pace of it. It really just slowed me up, like when I was in hospital I had a bunch of tulips by my bed. They used to open and close with the sunshine, and I would just watch them for hours. I was always so busy, I never would have done that. Because I couldn’t do my usual job, I started writing for therapy. Then when the first book was well received I kept going. The only thing I have been able to continue is a series of classes I run for fifth-year doctors. I get them in the last three months

DELICIOUS: Rosie Belton with some of the delights from her book, Wild Blackberries.

of their study, and teach them how to work with patients. But I don’t like to focus on the injury – it’s about remoulding my life. My new book was because I wanted to do

something really hopeful. How old are you now? I’m 64, I was 54 when my life changed. I would never have written my books if it weren’t for that.

a new life What are some of your other hobbies? I have a big garden and I love my garden. It has perennials and natives, even an orchard. In past times it was open to the public for garden tours, one was to fund raise for the Governors Bay jetty and the other for the Cathedral. Both are ruined now. It has been really tough since the earthquakes, and I’m writing another book about that. I’m just finishing it up now. I know there has been such a glut of earthquake books but this is a real diary – I have kept record for three and a half years. How did the earthquakes affect you? They really taught me to make every day as rich as possible and look after your family and friends through major disasters. After the earthquakes all of my children and their partners were here for the first time in 20 years, but when we had to move out of our house we didn’t have room for them all. One of them went up north. We were very lucky that no one died but we’ve sort of lost contact, which is sad. My two sons and their partners are still in Christchurch. That is sad! Tell me about your family. Yes, I have three adult children and six grandchildren and my husband – who is the same husband [I have always had].(Laughing). I’m enormously happy about having grandchildren. I have two here, and I try to go north as much as possible to see the

The continuity of a family is wonderful. What is your next plan? I have many things buzzing around in my head, but it has been hard to work away from home. I think it will be another non-fiction book as that comes naturally to me. I’m an observer, I always observe people and environments. The way my life has been, the threads all match up. Writing a play is not much different to writing a book. I think the theatre influenced my writing. I still mourn the loss of that – I used to take young people to France and Australia for theatre trips

and I miss that. Are you still able to keep in touch with them at all? One of the wonderful things is seeing people I have taught in the media. There are young people I taught reading the news and it’s just wonderful. They’re mostly in their 30s or 40s now. I’m very, very proud of them and they keep in touch with me. That’s good, would you tell me what it is like where you live? I’m in a sweet little bach right now, while my house (in Governors Bay) is being repaired. I have a gorgeous view at the bach looking straight down to Lyttelton, but I don’t have all of my stuff here. I miss Ribbonwood – our home– it has been a source of inspiration for much of my writing.

Cycle and pedestrian safety concerns are being targeted with a new shared path in Harewood. A shared pedestrian and cycle path will run along the side of Wooldridge Rd from Harewood Rd to Wairakei Rd, and is planned to run through portions of Nunweek Park. Approval was given for the path by the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board last week with $227,000 of Three Year Plan funds allocated for the project. Board deputy chairman David Cartwright said the path was a “key project” for the ward. He said cycle safety in the area had become a concern with increased traffic and the board wanted to act. “That’s again the byproduct of having our own budget versus the council budget,” he said. “We can focus to solve issues in our own ward. It’s a key project in our own ward that we can continue to develop.” Keith Turner from Spokes Canterbury attended the meeting and raised concerns about the path’s lack of connection with other cycle tracks in the area. He told the community board there was need for a more cohesive plan to make a safe and viable route for cyclists moving from east to west. Mr Cartwright agreed the cycle

The Cantabrian It Starts Here

network was “a jigsaw puzzle and we are missing a few pieces at either end,” but said the community board would also work on other cycle safety initiatives. As part of the Annual Plan, the city council last month committed to having a detailed cycle network in place for Christchurch in 2018. “There is a clear need and public support for safe options for cyclists in our city,” said city councillor Phil Clearwater when the plan was announced. “The major cycleways network will ensure cycling is a safe transport choice for residents and visitors. This supports the objectives set out in the Christchurch Transport Strategic Plan to provide alternatives to private vehicles and will help reduce congestion.” Mr Cartwright said until then, the community board would work on its own cycle-awareness projects. “We could start to identify some areas and put our own funding away to increase the awareness of cycling and safety for cyclists in the area,” he said. “Cycling is not as safe as it could be so what we can do, we should just get out there and do it.” Mr Cartwright said with good cycle paths and money spent on awareness “everybody wins”. “I’m always very happy when we can improve the safety of cyclists, I being one them.”

Music students in contention

Bishopdale pupils pop moves

BY HALEY JONES

Students from Burnside High School and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School are set to be major contenders in the New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest’s semi-finals next month. Kalim and Vaha ensemble from Burnside High School and ensembles Trio Emporte and Eklamore from Rangi Ruru Girls’ School are among the 12 semi-finalists, with a student from Burnside High School competing in the Auckland ensemble L’arc en cidl. Isaac Shatford from St Andrew’s College took out the senior composition section with his string quartet Frost and Fire. Adjudicator Philip Norman praised Isaac’s composition and said it was “a mature piece of writing – elegant, expressive, and musical. “It is the work of someone who has the techinical facility to say it.” The groups will be up against eight others from around the country, including four from Auckland, and one from Wellington, Hamilton and Whangarei. The semi-finals will be held on August 1, with the national finals on August 2. Both competitions will be at the Charles Luney Auditorium at St Margaret’s College. Each member of the winning group will receive the James Wallace Arts Trust Prize of $1000.

Bishopdale School pupils were dancing like stars last Wednesday night. A group of 24 pupils took part in the Dancing Like the Stars show at the Aurora Centre at Burnside High School. Pupils were taught a fast-paced routine by dance instructor Sandy Grey and school principal Sue Fisher. The group practised three days a week for the past nine weeks to prepare.

Do you recognise these items?

All geared up

BY PAUL MCDONALD The police need your help to identify these stolen items found following a burglary in Casebrook. Police have arrested the suspected 22-year-old male after a stolen vehicle was found in Casebrook with items believed to be stolen between Casebrook and Cashmere on June 9, 7am to 9pm. The items have not been reported as stolen and were not connected to the burglary in Casebrook, but it is believed they were stolen and identification may help to return the items to their rightful owners. Constable Amy Brazier said the stolen goods were most likely taken from an open garage before the suspect was caught. “People might not know they are missing yet, hopefully someone will recognise them when they see the photos.” Constable Brazier said the wallet was empty when it was found

NEW LOOKS: Christ The King School scored big last month, after receiving a $1000 ANZ netball grant. The grant, which included uniforms, bibs, balls, a gear bag and inflation equipment, would replace the school’s netball uniforms that were over a decade old. Debbie Kinder, who applied on behalf of the school, said the grant would be a real boost. “It’s fantastic to have some new uniforms for our year 5 and 6 teams. The old bibs are so big they fall off their shoulders and they have had to play in their P.E. uniforms because the plastic clips on the netball skirts can come undone,” she said.

and the cellphone had been wiped so there was no proof of identification. If you recognise any of these items phone Constable Brazier on 363 7400 with the file number 140609/3411.

S

haring a meal with good company is never an evening wasted, as guests attending this year’s Ronald McDonald House South Island (RMHSI) Supper Club were aware. The preprandial cocktail party held at Mashina Lounge recently, was alive with the anticipation of good food presented for a great cause. With appetites whetted, the diners departed for a magical mystery tour to the secret venues where a gastronomic dream awaited. The simultaneous dinner parties provide an enjoyable and elegant vehicle to raise much needed funds to support the work of RMHSI in helping children in need and their families. Bon appétit!

Eternal youth In our quest for eternal youth, some people will pay a fortune and try the wackiest fads to slow the physical signs of ageing.

P

lastic surgery will slice it out, Botox may plump it up, creams can claim, cosmetics conceal. However, the construction of radiant skin starts many layers deep below the surface with the elastic “glue” that holds the body together. This “glue” is collagen, produced in the underlying layer of the skin - the dermis. Think of collagen as the filling in a mattress, with the outer skin (epidermis) as bed sheets. When collagen starts to break down, the “mattress” becomes saggy and wrinkles the sheets.

HOLLYWOOD: A beautiful result for a female patient in her 60’s

AGING GRACEFULLY: Natural teeth for a gentleman patient in his 80’s

Collagen makes up about 25 per cent of the total proteins in the human body. It's part of our connective tissue and teams up with keratin to add strength and resilience to skin, hair and nails and mobility for healthier joints. Collagen repairs connective tissues for improved elasticity, improves circulation, promotes wound healing, and glycine builds lean muscle to help burn fat while you sleep. All this wonderful work happens naturally when we are in our youth and our collagen production is at its peak. It typically slows at a rate of 1.5 per cent a year after age 25, and the resulting signs are sagging skin, wrinkles, ligament and tendon injuries and joint problems. Supplementing with collagen is one of the most dynamic ways to provide all the specific amino acids necessary to replenish the body’s collagen supply. Research shows that hydrolysed types I and III collagen increase collagen levels in the skin, support tendons and ligaments and help with exercise recovery. Collagen supplementation should be accompanied with vitamin C - key to the production of collagen. It helps skin repair itself and as an antioxidant, it slows the rate of free radical damage to collagen. To find out more about beauty from the inside out, talk to the staff at Health 2000 Avonhead.

Audiologists New Zealand (IANZ). “By being independent, we will recommend the hearing solution that really is the best for you. We are not a chain or owned by a hearing aid manufacturer so we are free of any monetary influence when choosing your hearing solution,” says Carolyn Gordon, who runs the clinic in partnership with Carolyn Till. “We believe in premium personal service and offer hearing aids at competitive prices.” The two friendly professional audiologists have a combined experience of over 30 years. At their newly renovated clinic in Edgeware, they offer hearing tests for adults and children over five, hearing aid consultations including selection, fittings and counselling, assessment and management of tinnitus (persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears) and advice on hearing preservation. Both Carolyns strongly believe in the importance of hearing and say any loss of hearing should not be ignored. As hearing loss usually occurs slowly, people are often unaware of the problem. Family members often notice first.

“The telltale signs of hearing loss are: people seem to mumble, there is a need for repeats, the TV and radio are hard to hear and there are difficulties hearing conversations at social functions,” Gordon says. “If hearing loss is left untreated, it can cause problems with social interaction and family relationships, and this can result in frustration, social isolation and loneliness,” Till says. Untreated hearing loss is also linked to a higher incidence of health problems such as dementia, brain volume loss and also higher

11

hospitalisation rates than for those with normal hearing later in life. Loss of hearing can affect the ability of working people to do their jobs, and in some occupations jeopardise safety. Due to the recent increase in ACC funding, people with a work-noise history who are eligible for ACC can get an increased contribution towards hearing aids - some models may even be free. So if you have a history of worknoise exposure or an existing ACC client, call Gordon & Till Audiology to arrange an appointment and have a free initial consultation. The audiologists encourage anyone with concerns about their hearing to make an appointment, phone 385 6036. Gordon & Till Audiology is located at 701 Barbadoes St, near Warrington St. It is on the M and No 44 bus routes and there is off-street parking. Clinic hours are from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, or after hours by arrangement.

Painting Specialists committed to long-term in Christchurch Christchurch-based company Clearwater Painting prides itself on being a local company with local employees, offering the best-possible service and workmanship to its customers. “We are 100 per cent customer focused,” says owner Dave Clearwater. “The key aspect of our business is that we specialise in working with individual property owners, and we collate all the tradesmen involved in a job so everything runs smoothly.” Another notable aspect of Clearwater Painting is that seven of the tradespeople are female. “We’re very proud of that. The women are very good painters and have a great eye for detail. The added advantage is that many of our customers like having females working in their home,” Dave says. “We also have our female site manager, Erin, who makes sure all the jobs are done according to plan and completed on time.” In the office, the first point of contact for customers is Bernie, who liaises between

the homeowner and the tradespeople and guides customers through the renovation process. “People are trusting us with their biggest asset and our motto is ‘Treat the home as if it were your own’,” Bernie says. Clearwater Painting is currently specialising in ‘opt out’ work, and to date has completed earthquake repairs on more than 400 homes. “We do interior and exterior painting, wallpapering, gib stopping, plastering and roof repairs. We also have our own builders and can do work like bathroom remodelling, minor alterations, fencing and decking,” Dave says. Staff numbers have increased to deal with post-earthquake work and Dave hopes to retain all his staff, even when that work is finished. “We are committed to providing the best of service for many years to come.” For a no-obligation quotation, phone Dave Clearwater, 0274 800 967.

Swim towards the light A surreal world of deep caves A surreal world of deep caves onon aa Fijian island Fijian island enthrals Peter de GraafPeter enthrals DROWNING. Confined spaces. Within minutes everyone in the de Graaf Darkness. Swimming under obstructions, unsure where — or whether — you’ll emerge. A visit to Sawa-i-Lau Caves pushes several basic fear buttons. I’m okay with darkness and tight spaces, but the mere thought of swimming underwater from one cave to another is enough to trigger a cold sweat. So it was with some trepidation that I boarded a dinghy bound for the caves, hidden within a small, rocky island in the north of Fiji’s Yasawa Islands. Thirteen of us piled into a 5m aluminium dinghy equipped with six lifejackets. It turned out the boat trip was half the adventure. “They told me only four people were coming,” our driver grumbled as he coaxed the outboard into life and rearranged the passengers. We followed a string of islands, their grassy spines broken by towers of solid lava, and skirted a series of shallow reefs. I wondered why our driver was chugging along so slowly until another boat crunched to a halt on a reef. Once we hit open water our driver found the throttle. He also found a swell.

Someone at the rear of the boat kindly handed me a dive mask so I could see vaguely through the spray. What I saw was an island that wasn’t like the others. The rest of the Yasawas are rolling, grass-covered and volcanic; Sawa-i-Lau is a limestone oddity, bare, black and slightly ominous, with cliffs rising sharply from the sea. We were delivered dripping on to a beach and, after the inevitable safety briefing, pointed in the direction of a concrete staircase snaking around the rocks to a door set into the side of the island. Once my eyes adjusted to the dim light I saw another flight of steps descending into a watery cave. Leaving everything but my togs and mask behind I jumped into a surreal world. The water inside Sawa-iLau Caves is constantly replenished by unseen passages to the sea. The roof soars 15m above the water like a cathedral vault — one

limestone outcrop even looks like a pulpit — and light filters through an opening in the roof, framing a tree-lined square of sky. The real buzz, however, comes from visiting the next cavern. The catch is that it’s connected to the first only by an underwater passage. How would I know I wasn’t going to bump into someone squeezing through the other way? How would I know when to surface? And how could I be sure there really was air on the other side? The waiver I’d been ordered to sign didn’t make me feel any better. It detailed several unpleasant ways of dying or being maimed, and made it clear I’d forfeited all rights to legal recompense.

I contemplated quietly sneaking back to the boat. But how would I answer the inevitable questions about the caves? And would I reproach myself forever for being a chicken? Luckily, a guide had stationed himself at the entrance to the passage. He was friendly, as all Fijians seem to be, but probably unsympathetic to a grown man’s whimperings. He told me to swim towards the light — straining my eyes I could see a feeble glow which looked to be several miles away — and asked if I was ready. “Yes,” I said, meaning “No.” Without further ceremony he placed a firm hand on the

Loneliness adds to misery Thoughts of suicide among people with Asperger’s syndrome are found to be avoidably high ADULTS with Asperger’s syndrome — a type of autism — are nine times more likely to experience suicidal thoughts than members of the general population, a study in the UK has found. Scientists at a Cambridge clinic surveyed 374 individuals diagnosed with the developmental disorder between 2004 and 2013. They found that two-thirds had contemplated suicide and a third had planned or attempted suicide. Suicidal thoughts and behaviour are significantly more common in those Asperger’s adults who have a history of depression. Lead scientist Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, from the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, says: “Adults with Asperger’s syndrome often suffer with secondary depression due to social isolation, loneliness, social exclusion, lack of community services, under-achievement and

The new findings are published in the journal The Lancet Psychiatry. “This important study highlights the struggles that too many people with autism, including Asperger’s syndrome, unnecessarily face,” says Carol Povey, director of Britain’s National Autistic Society’s Centre for Autism. “The communication and interaction difficulties people on the autism spectrum experience can make them particularly vulnerable to social isolation, which in turn can lead to mental health issues and suicidal thoughts,” says Povey. “Two-thirds of adults with autism and Asperger’s syndrome in a recent NAS survey told us they have felt depressed because of loneliness. “With the right support, people with the condition can play an active part in their communities and have perfectly good mental health — just like anybody else. “Mental health issues should be taken seriously in people with autism and not seen as an inevitable part of the condition,” she says. — AAP

HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS RUGBY UNDER 13 Trip to the West Coast - July 2014

EAST MEETS WEST CHALLENGE

On 12 July 2014, the High School Old Boys under-13 rugby team will travel to Greymouth to play a Blaketown rugby side. The High School Old Boys under-13 sides have a tradition of travelling each year to the West Coast for this game. This is a great opportunity for the boys as it prepares them for high school level rugby next year.

The boys are looking forward to enjoying typical West Coast hospitality provided by the Paroa Hotel, which has been a massive support to the groups over the previous years and are supporting the team again this year. A very special thank you to Couplands and the Mad Butcher Riccarton for their support.

FOOD CHICKEN & CRANBERRY CASSEROLE

This casserole could also be cooked at 180 deg C for 1 hour, however slow-cooking improves the flavours. INGREDIENTS 1kg Skinned and boned chicken thighs 1-2 Tbsp olive oil 2 rashers Rindless bacon, chopped 1 Onion, diced 1 tsp dried thyme

Lamb & brown rice salad

1 cup Fresh or frozen cranberries ½ cup Orange juice 2 Tbsp maple syrup

Here’s a tip - crumbled feta would be a tasty addition to this salad.

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 160 deg C. Saute chicken thighs in batches in olive oil in a frying pan until lightly browned all over. Place in a casserole. Saute bacon until browned, then saute onion until softened. Add both to casserole. Add remaining ingredients. Cover and cook in oven for 2 hours. Potatoes can be baked at the same time. Serves 4-6

INGREDIENTS 2 Courgettes, sliced 1 cup Brown rice 2 Red capsicums, deseeded and chopped 12 Asparagus spears, chopped 600g Lamb, back straps 2 Tbsp Olive oil 1 Salt & freshly ground pepper, to season ½ cup Black olives Dressing 1 Tbsp Lemon juice

Asparagus with parmigiano and mayonnaise

Here’s a great dish to make the most of asparagus when they’re at their best. INGREDIENTS 20 Asparagus, spears ½ tsp Sugar ½ tsp Salt ½ cup Mayonnaise 50g Parmigiano cheese, grated DIRECTIONS Snap off the asparagus ends or peel the last 2-3cm. Heat a pot of water to blanch the asparagus. Add salt and sugar to the water — this helps heighten the green colour of the asparagus. When water reaches a rolling

1 tsp Harissa paste 1 tsp Dijon mustard ½ tsp Sea salt ¼ cup Olive oil DIRECTIONS Place rice in a saucepan with 2 cups of lightly salted water. Bring to the boil, immediately cover and reduce heat to as low as possible and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes until water is absorbed and rice is cooked. Alternatively, cook rice according to packet instructions. Turn rice out onto a shallow dish to cool. Meanwhile, heat a griddle or barbecue grill, toss courgettes, boil, add the asparagus. Cover with a lid and cook for 3-4 minutes. Drain in a sink with cold running water and ice if you have it. Remove from the water when cool and drain and place on a serving plate. Combine the parmigiano and mayonnaise and pour over the asparagus. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve.

capsicum and asparagus with a little oil and cook until just tender. Set aside. Brush the lamb with oil and season with salt and pepper. Cook the lamb over a high heat on the griddle or barbecue for 3 minutes each side, or more if you like. Set lamb aside to rest. Combine the lemon juice, harissa, mustard, salt and olive oil in a bowl. Roughly chop asparagus, then mix vegetables and olives with rice. Slice lamb into 1cm thick slices and either combine with salad or arrange on top. Drizzle with dressing and serve. Serves 4 3 Garlic cloves 2 tsp Mint 1 to taste Salt and freshly ground pepper 2 Tbsp Oil 8 Lamb chops 1 handful Fresh parsley DIRECTIONS Combine rind of one lemon, 2 tbsp lemon juice, crushed garlic, mint (dried), salt, pepper and oil in a small bowl. Place lamb chops (mid-loin) in a shallow dish and pour over marinade. Turn to coat. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Heat a barbecue grill and cook lamb for 4 to 5 minutes each side until cooked to your liking. Allow to rest for a few minutes after cooking. Flooding work approved Flooding work worth $1.5 million was approved last week for the flood-hit Waimakariri. The Waimakariri District Council last Tuesday approved $1.5million of unbudgeted work towards resolution of the widespread flooding issues in the district following extreme rainfall on June 9 and 10. The WDC said its newly established flood team faced a “substantial undertaking”, assessing flood damage from the heavy rain earlier in June, consulting with the communities of those areas worst affected, creating short, medium and long term resolutions and dealing with over 400 separate service requests lodged with the WDC since the floods. The flood team, is made up of district council engineering staff and external specialists specifically seconded for the undertaking, and will be managed by a reference group of district councillors and senior staff. The flood response reference group includes Deputy Mayor Kevin Felstead, who holds the drainage portfolio, district councillor Peter Farrant who holds the utilities portfolio and has a civil engineering background, manager utilities and roading Gerard Cleary, three waters manager Kalley Simpson and project delivery manager Gary Boot. The flood team is tasked with immediate and longer term responses to the flooding issues,

PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN involving the collation of service requests, staff and community observations and a review of previous investigations. These are being used to group similar problems in geographical areas and prepare a list of projects for prioritised investigation. The response has been organised into four separate phases – initial response, immediate solutions, longer term responses and a review of current WDC systems to improve any weaknesses. Several high priority projects have already been identified, including West Kaiapoi from Otaki St through to Island Rd, Brace-

bridge Cres and Feldwick Drive in Kaiapoi, Clear View Lane and surrounding roads in Mandalea, West Rangiora, sewer issues and groundwater resurgence flooding in Mandeville and Dockey Creek which affected the Fernside and Mairaki area. Further investigation will also be carried out on other potential projects including Max Wallace Drive, Kowhai Ave, Greens Rd and Te Puuapatuki Rd. WDC said there were also a large number of property specific flooding issues, some of which would occasion individual resolutions if resolving the problem could not

be achieved by the wider drainage network approach for the community. WDC staff would continue a series of community meetings and held one on July 3 at the Kaiapoi Golf Club. A meeting will be held on July 8 at the Gateway New Life Church in Rangiora for those in areas southwest of Rangiora and the final meeting would be held on July 15 at the Baptist Church in Rangiora. Staff were also holding a general flooding information drop-in session at the WDC council chambers in High Street, Rangiora, from 3-7pm on Wednesday July 16.

Kaiapoi town centre meeting Waimakariri District Council is holding an update evening on July 10 on the latest progress and plans for the Kaiapoi town centre. Update evenings have been held annually since 2012, and have been well attended by the local community and business owners. WDC staff will present update information on topics including the plans for the Kaiapoi Wharf and the riverbanks, Kaiapoi Library development progress, the status and development activity of commercial and residential areas and the Land Use Recovery Plan. Enterprise North Canterbury staff will also provide an update on business support and promotion initiatives. WDC senior policy analyst Heike Lulay said the update evening would portray the high levels of developmental activity in Kaiapoi. ”With a combination of council projects and private redevelopment plans, Kaiapoi town centre will see even more exciting changes in the near future. This event provides a great opportunity to come along and hear about how the town centre is progressing and what is planned,” she said. The update evening will run from 5.30pm to 7.15pm at the Kaiapoi Golf Club, 373 Williams St, Kaiapoi. Refreshments will be available from 5 pm and no registrations are required.

Labour promises to invest in Canty health Labour last week promised to invest in Canterbury’s health system to help people dealing with the ongoing health impacts of the earthquakes and their aftermath. Speaking outside Rangiora Hospital last week, Labour’s health spokeswoman Annette King and Member of Parliament Clayton Cosgrove announced Labour’s health policy for the region. “Nearly four years on and people in Canterbury are still struggling with the after effects of the quakes,” Ms King said. “We are hearing reports of increasing numbers of young people being on suicide watch and mental health providers struggling to cope with the extra demand. “That is why Labour is promising to invest $1 million in local non-government mental health services and double the number of nurses working in the Canterbury District Health Board schools-based mental health team,” she said. “Labour is also committing to investing $12.5 million for new health hubs in Rangiora and Akaroa, something the DHB has been left to pay for out of baseline funding despite extra and on-going costs following the earthquakes. “We will also ensure that after hours GP services are available. “The people of Canterbury want to get on with their lives. Having access to the health services they need is an essential part of that.”

Jackson’s Rd bridge likely to cost $165,000 Flood damage to the Jackson’s Rd bridge in Ohoka has rendered it beyond repair. The bridge, which has been out of action since June 10, was assessed for damage last month and it was discovered that the abutments to the bridge suffered flood damage meaning a new bridge will need to be built. The New Zealand Transport Agency last month approved emergency funding for the new bridge. Design work has been approved and contractors organised to get the rebuild work underway immediately. Engineers estimate it will take about one month to complete the rebuild of the bridge. The $165,000 bill will be 50 per cent funded by NZTA. For students at Ohoka School, the pedestrian bridge is still in operation.

For several years now, some of Germany’s biggest companies have started waking up to the counterproductive effects of expecting executives to be reachable around the clock. “Burnout” has become a buzzword in recent years as an explosion in the number of work related psychological illnesses has forced companies to rethink the demands they make on employees. The last few years have seen firms such as Volkswagen install virtual dams to prevent the seemingly unstoppable deluge of work-related emails from reaching stressed employees at home. “The more work encroaches on people’s private lives, the more employees are likely to suffer from stress, burnout and an inability to switch off,” the national institute for occupational safety and health, BAuA, said in a report. Originally aimed at about 1000 white-collar employees, the measure has since been widened to cover about 5000 staff members — out of a total domestic workforce of 255,000. Rival car maker BMW has a different approach. “We are aware that a boundary needs to be drawn between work and private life. But we don’t want rigid rules to negate the advantages of worker flexibility,” says Jochen Frey, a spokesman for BMW’s human resources department.

The sender of the email is alerted to the employee’s absence and invited to contact a colleague instead. In 2010, the management of Deutsche Telekom decided that employees were no longer expected to be reachable around the clock and France Telecom adopted a similar initiative. France recently introduced a “right to unplug” for workers in the technology and consultancy sectors, where there are often no set working hours. The law, which sparked a lot of bemused coverage in the Anglo-Saxon media, effectively obliges workers to switch off

itself introduced guidelines banning its employees from being contacted in their free time unless justified by exceptional circumstances. In Sweden there is scepticism that a law obliging employees to “unplug” their work-related devices is the way forward. Martin Wastfelt of the Unionen, Sweden’s largest white-collar trade union, calls for more pragmatism. “It’s more effective to appeal to reason and explain to companies that it is in their interests to safeguard the health of their employees,” he says.

SOCIAL LIFE

TV crazes now permeate all media By Alison King Whether you have read the books or watched the TV series you would be hard pressed not to have heard of Game of Thrones, especially if you are on social media. The popular adaptation of the George RR Martin books came to the end of Season 4. There were the usual spoiler alerts as our friends in the United States were the first to view, and like the ubiquitous Fifa World Cup Mexican wave, social media users around the world followed.

It’s not just the finale that spurs on these posts. Social networks have been filling up with their own take on the Game of Thrones throughout this season — and previous. Pinterest emailed me with a humorous take on the programme with links to Game of Thrones memes and on Buzzfeed there’s a post titled “33 jokes only fans will understand”. My particular favourite on this was number 6, the pains of having a crush on a bad boy: “On a scale of one to Sansa Stark, how much do you regret your

childhood crush?” I’m sure no one’s first crush could rival Joffrey in the cruelty stakes. There’s also the constant issue of the different reactions of those who have read the books and those who haven’t, with the former often berating the production crew for changing things. My favourite Game of Thrones social media trend this week was the warrior name generator courtesy of Zimbio. Last week’s generator quiz was all about which country should you live in, but this one had a

more creative outcome (just because I said I liked exploring cities on foot does not mean I should live in India). Key in your first and last name and your weapon of choice and you end up with something like Alison “The Vulgarian” King, Obstructer of Summer, rides for House Tully. Of course, now the series is over, newsfeeds are full of memes demonstrating how long fans will have to wait for the next season. Until then I think I might re-read the books — it will take me that long.

Marshall’s stock a comprehensive herbal dispensary and also offer private and confidential consultations from their dedicated clinic room, where Julie can discuss and formulate a realistic wellbeing plan to suit your lifestyle and budget. As an ex-chef, Julie has a strong focus on “food as medicine” and recognises that vital force has been taken out of our food through refining, processing and additives in our food. When we add stress and suppressed emotions to the equation, our body has difficulty keeping in balance. As a result, many of us have become unwittingly malnourished. There is an undeniable link

between our diet, lifestyle, environment and dysfunction in our bodies. We are what we eat, but just as important, we are what we think, feel and speak. Julie relates, “Through clinical experience, 95 per cent of cases with dysfunction in our bodies, there is an emotional element which also needs to be addressed.” Julie works with the individual through various techniques of mind, body and vibrational medicine. She uses various tools to suit the individual, including the basic principles of traditional Chinese medicine in addition to kinesiology (muscle testing), meridian clearing, chakra balancing, neurolinguistic programming and emotional release techniques to support the person’s walk back to health and wellbeing. • Vitamin C, citrus bioflavonoids, betacarotene (pro-vitamin A) and copper have potent antioxidant ability and help protect the eyes from damage. • Lutein and zeaxanthin may even help reverse some of the signs of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). • Bilberry and blackcurrant may help protect the lens and retina from damage, reduce the risk of cataracts and help improve blood supply to the eye, strengthen the small capillaries of the eye, help improve night vision and alleviate many eye ailments. • Eyebright may help normalise eye pressure and reduce eye allergies.

• Taurine is an amino acid that is essential for correct eye function. • Vitamin B2 may help alleviate eye fatigue and maintain good vision. • Yumberry is rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) that may protect eyesight. These nutrients, taken in a therapeutic amount, should provide comprehensive eye protection, may slow and possibly even help reverse eye damage that could lead to loss of vision. stamps. Stamp artist Mark Hess started painting the correct face on the stamp art, ready for reprinting. Directors at the US Postal Service then made a controversial decision. They re-issued 150,000 of the faulty Ben Pickett stamps, which were offered to buyers through a lottery. Their purpose was to reduce the astronomical value placed on the original 183 stamps. They wanted all philatelists to have a piece of Ben Pickett at a reasonable cost. Sales would also defray the cost of reprinting five million new stamps. “Proofreading isn’t always about spelling mistakes and grammar errors,” said Brian Morris, Principal at New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “Sometimes, it is looking at a stamp or a photo of a building and asking yourself ‘Is that correct?’” Publishers all around the world are looking for fastidious spellers who can spot an error at 50 paces. hen the US Postal Service unveiled a new series of stamps in 1994 featuring “Cowboy Legends of the West”, one 29c stamp captured the public interest. It featured Bill Pickett, the celebrated African-American cowboy who invented the technique of ‘bulldogging’ or steer wrestling. Five million stamps were distributed to all US post offices. Then the problem was discovered.

The Pickett family declared, “That’s not Bill; the stamp shows his brother Ben Pickett.” By this time, 183 panes of the stamp had been sold. What to do? “Recall the 4,999,817 unsold stamps!” was the order. Collectors went into a frenzy chasing up the 183 Ben Pickett

WOMEN needed to fill demand for

ICT places

I

nformation and communication technology consistently tops lists of the most in-demand and well-paid jobs. With demand at such a peak, the ICT industry is encouraging women to train for what has traditionally been a maledominated field. Ana Connor, eCommerce Manager for Foodstuffs, says a career in ICT offers a lot of scope for ongoing learning and career

development, regardless of the type of role you start out in. “There are many disciplines, and the type of work varies a lot depending on your own interests and aptitude. The work is wellpaid, the hours can be flexible and skilled staff are always in demand,” she says. CPIT’s female ICT students are already embracing the growing movement, banding together to found a “Tech Girls” group on campus.

To make getting into ICT even easier for all students, CPIT is offering discounted Certificate and Diploma fees and six scholarships for Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology students who begin their studies in semester 2 this year. The scholarships cover the first year of tuition fees. To find out more, phone 0800 242 476 or see www.cpit.ac.nz.

ARTISTIC ENERGY

W

hen a friend recommended Jonathan Milne’s book Go! The Art of Change to Anne Bannock, she looked into studying at The Learning Connexion the school of art and creativity based in Wellington which Jonathan founded and directs. She realised that its study-from-

home part-time option suited her down to a tee. “My lifelong ambition was to go to an art school and to be part of the creative energy that goes with it,” says Anne. “To enter a new world of understanding modern art and new ideas. My studio is a converted cow shed which serves as my studio and gallery, and is open to the public in the summer.”

Aoraki – a fun

place to learn

A

lisha Rollinson had only just left school when she decided to take her dream career further and look into study options for early childhood. “I had attended a food safety course that my workplace had put me through which was held at the Aoraki Polytechnic, and I loved the environment,” says Alisha. “I found a course that took my interest that had a mid-year start. I enrolled and completed the Certificate in Parenting and Care of Children and then went on to further my studies by enrolling in the Certificate in Early Childhood Studies.” Alisha says her studies were so relevant to the early childhood industry, covering everything from having the ability to communicate effectively with children, having knowledge and skills in an early childhood sector, understanding children’s basic needs, understanding their behaviours and having an understanding of the early childhood curriculum - Te Whariki.

“I love that we go out on placement - getting experience in an early childhood centre and learning from that environment. We have fun while learning and the polytechnic is an awesome environment to learn in.” The Advanced Diploma programme has been the best programme of study for Anne. “Everyone I have met has been helpful, especially the tutors. I have met some students when I attended a block class and now I follow their progress via the magic of the workroom, TLC’s online student forum.” To enquire, call us on 0800 278 769, or email us at admissions@tlc.ac.nz.

Course provides opportunity

A

Christchurch Academy qualification in Pharmacy Assistant Level 3 can open a lot of doors. “Many of our graduates go on to train with us to be dispensary technicians; others find work in the retail side of pharmacy. Some even have the opportunity to become managers,” says tutor Barbara Colville. “That’s because the course covers everything from human anatomy and overthe-counter medicines to photography and cosmetology. And there’s a strong emphasis on customer service too.” Seventeen-year-old Jaimee hopes that

the qualification will lead her to a career running a beauty counter in a pharmacy. She left Middleton Grange School last year with NCEA Levels 1 and 2 and an Excellence endorsement in Art at level 1, and thanks to the careers team there found out about the academy. She knew she wanted to have a job that would let her help people and she has “always loved going into pharmacies as they are really friendly environments - it inspired me to do this course”. As well as the theory, Jaimee does one day a week of work experience at a pharmacy, which has helped her to build her confidence and meet new people. And best of

all, because she qualifies for Youth Guarantee, the course is free for her. Colville is certain that when she graduates later this year, Jaimee will be more than ready to take her first steps towards achieving her dream.

The quality of the air we breathe

31 3

South Island Hardware has been making homes warm and cosy for many years

affects our health and ability to perform

W

e breathe in and out approximately 20,000 litres of air every day. It is therefore very important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation. Ventilation is the process of air exchange to provide the necessary air quality that meets the needs of the occupants for clean, fresh air. Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stuffiness in the room, and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible harmful substances like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful and can cause various diseases. Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation. However, as winter approaches, we start to shut up our houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline. Ventilation includes both the exchange of air to the outside as well as circulation of air within the building. It is one of the most important factors for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings. Filtered air supply for summer and filtered and warmed air in winter creates a healthy environment in which to live and work. In case of poor or insufficient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases and humidity and dustiness levels increase. If exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is not effective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed.

To ensure the quality of your air, contact the experts. Smooth-Air Products can calculate the required air exchange for your building requirement. Smooth-Air offers a wide range of ventilation equipment, from air vents to ducting for fans, for both the commercial and domestic markets. They have an extensive range of fans and ventilation components in-store but they can also provide innovative solutions tailored to differing requirements.

Why buy a Masport wood fire?

Wood fires are energy-efficient and designed to heat your whole home. A wood fire has multiple functions. Apart from warming your home, they can be used for water heating and cooking, making it a smart solution if the power goes out.

South Island Hardware has an extensive range of free-standing and built-in wood fire solutions for you, with clean air fires that meet the Ministry for the Environment and Environment Canterbury Standards’ rural fires for properties situated on two hectares or more. The Christchurch Pops Choir is hoping to warm up winter for people by performing two concerts of fun and funky music, according to the choir's Artistic Director Luke Di Somma. The concert titled 'Get Your Groove On' features well known popular music from performers such as Lady Gaga, Adele,The Jackson 5, Elton John, and Dave Dobbyn. "The 60-strong choir will be performing an eclectic mix of great music that everyone knows and loves," Mr Di Somma said. Thrown into the mix of pop music through the decades, the choir's repertoire also includes some gospel music and a couple of Broadway show tunes. "The Pops Choir is unique because of the range of music we sing and the energy and exciting way we sing it," Mr Di Somma said. The choir was formed in 2011 and this is their second stand-alone concert, though

they have performed in numerous corporate and charity gigs. Mr Di Somma said Pops Choir performances have been as varied as their repertoire, from performing with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra at the CBS Arena, to flashmob appearances around the city. "The choir has morphed from a group of transitional singers to an established musical group. Wherever we perform, we aim to sing with style and excellence." The Christchurch Pops Choir will perform their concert 'Get Your Groove On' at St Margaret's College (Charles Luney) Auditorium on Sunday July 13 at 3pm and 7pm. Tickets are available through The Court Theatre.
